Revitalizing primary health care for the 21st century

The Global Conference on Primary Health Care, which took place in Astana, Kazakhstan, on 25–26 October 2018, brought together 1 200 delegates from more than 120 countries to recommit to strengthening primary health care.

The Declaration of Alma-Ata which was endorsed at a pivotal conference in 1978 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, was the first to underline the importance of primary health care and put health equity on the international agenda. Today, 40 years later, the Astana conference endorsed a new declaration, and thereby provided renewed impetus and global commitment emphasizing the critical role of primary health care around the world.

The Astana Declaration will refocus efforts on primary health care to ensure that everyone everywhere is able to enjoy the highest possible attainable standard of health.
